2004 SEA OTTER CLASSIC LIVES UP TO ITS NAME
The 2004 Sea Otter Classic held for the 14th year in a row at the legendary Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA, was a great time for racers, spectators and everyone in between. The estimated 50,000 spectators and 10,000 registered riders who attended the four-day event were treated to perfect NorCal weather and blue skies. The Mountain Cycle crew from Portland, OR, left the event with moderate sunburns, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows about the weather in the Pacific Northwest.
The Mountain Cycle pits were packed every day with dealers, racers and consumers who enjoyed demo rides, Widmer micro-brew and a tasty BBQ. On Friday and Saturday, we worked the large crowd in front of our booth into a swag-starved frenzy by giving away prizes from Adidas Eyewear, Chris King, Truvativ, Titec, Kombucha Wonder Drink, Primal Wear, Answer Manitou, Fox Racing, and DT Swiss. To cap off each raffle on both days, we gave away and a brand-new Rumble S/1 single-speed frame to two very excited and lucky winners. Friday’s winner was Frank Torres from Texas.
Saturday’s winner was Kevin Allen from nearby San Jose. He bravely endured shouts of “NEXT” and “LOSER” during the moment of delay between being called and coming forward to claim the coveted prize.

MBA GOOFS
Eagle-eyed readers of the March 2004 issue of Mountain Bike Action magazine have contacted us to find out why we’re showing a 2003 Mountain Cycle in a 2004 issue of the magazine. Well, the mistake wasn't made by us: it occurred while the magazine was being assembled for printing. However, the good folks at MBA acknowledged the oversight and are taking steps to rectify the situation. The old model featured in the offending ad has been replaced in our fortified 2004 line with a new model called the Zen. Please click here to see the Zen and all the other new models in our 2004 arsenal.

2004 MOUNTAIN CYCLE!
Our engineers built the first Mountain Cycle monocoque frame in 1989. The latest frame was welded at our headquarters in Portland, Oregon a couple hours ago. Between then and now, about 10,000 lucky all-terrain addicts have lived and loved the kind of riding the rest of the world can only dream of: challenging all-terrain adventures for which Mountain Cycle bicycles are famous.
Mountain Cycle bikes and frames can survive these kinds of adventures because of our obsessive, relentless pursuit of engineering excellence. You name itpivot locations, monocoque wall thicknesses, tubing shapes and sizes, material properties, machining tolerances, welding sequences and building fixtureswe scrutinize, analyze and optimize every detail of our products to make sure they’re the best-built, best-handling bikes in the world. After assembly and heat treatment, we face our head tubes and thread our bottom brackets on purpose-built machines to ensure perfect alignment and ease of assembly. Then we apply tough, protective, glossy powdercoat or anodized finishes for durability and lasting beauty.
Mountain Cycle bikes like the now legendary ShockWave 9point5 validate our monocoque design philosophy by continuing to advance what’s possible on a full-suspension MTB. Brand-new Mountain Cycle frames like the Sin and Fury will change freeriding forever by infusing our aerospace engineering and fabrication technologies with a mega dose of adrenaline. Aboard bikes like the all-new Mountain Cycle Zen and Rumble S/1, aggressive cyclists will take cross-country expeditions and urban assault riding to the next level. And now, thanks to Mountain Cycle bicycles like the all-new Virtue and Stumptown, even disciples of the road and cyclocross scenes can enjoy riding closer to the edge. That’s because at Mountain Cycle, nothing we build is conservative. One ride and you’ll know what we mean.

THE SIN
Mountain Cycle is proud to announce the arrival of a new hard-core freeride model, the SIN. The SIN will be unveiled at EuroBike and InterBike and is only a taste of what we’ve developed for the new season. The SIN frameset has been designed and developed within the parameters of Mountain Cycle’s legendary high standards, and attention to detail is evident throughout. Similar to its big brother, the ShockWave 9point5, the SIN is a full monocoque, single pivot, cantilever beam design that provides the ultimate in strength and stiffness to weight ratio. The SIN incorporates the same basic design as the ShockWave 9point5, but is manufactured with lighter weight aluminum sheet and with a steeper head angle for greater steering response. The SIN is front derailleur compatible and can be set up with a triple ring, double with bash, or single ring with chain guide depending on rider preference. The forged BB shell and main-pivot assembly incorporates integrated ISCG mounting points and is CNC machined to reduce all excess weight in a rigid, trussed structure. The 7 inches of travel is kept very smooth and consistent by utilizing low-maintenance high-performance sealed cartridge bearings on widely spaced mounting points. This configuration provides incredible lateral stiffness in the swingarm. The SIN will come equipped with a Fox Vanilla RC shock, ban can also be upgraded to the much sought after Progressive 5th Element to dial in the bike for any rider on any terrain. Like all Mountain Cycle models, the SIN was developed with state-of-the-art solid modeling software to create both the solid ride and outstanding appearance that all Mountain Cycle frames are famous for. The full monocoque frame will be available in 3 sizes and includes the famous adjustable steerer stop to protect frame from double crown fork impacts in the event of a crash. Finishes include red and white powder coated main frames with silver anodized swing arms or complete anodized black frame options. The SIN is one of six new models that are to be released at the 2004 tradeshows. Expect to see many more Mountain Cycles than ever before on the race courses and trails near you.

JIB 2, FILMING IN PORTLAND
Thor Wixom was in town recently filming for his new movie, JIB 2. So, of course, we felt the need to be part of the mayhem and headed down to meet up with the crew in northeast Portland. After some street sessions on the way, we hooked up with about 20 riders waiting for Thor and crew to arrive. Then “the machine” rolled up in style. The Invictus Productions vehicle is a full-size 80’s Suburban, white with spray painted logos/graphics, lifted with fat tires. The best part about it is when turned off, it runs for another minute or so and then has a finale of one large, window-shaking backfire that screams, “I’m here!”
With plenty of people ready to ride and film ready to roll, we started riding and watching others rip it up. Lloyd Center Park was where it began with some super technical trials riding, hopping up to, into and out of trees, launching picnic tables, etc. The filming moved all over Portland to wall rides, stair gaps, ledges and more. Hot talent came out of the woodwork and included our own “Tiny Dancer” (the ripper on the Rumble in our ads) as well as our factory Mountain Cycle racer, Brett Luelling, who rumbled all around town with some sick moves. Filming continued into the night and was resumed multiple times over the next couple of days. No major injuries, lot’s of laughs and good times!
We look forward to seeing JIB 2 and the rest of the films Thor is working on
as soon they’re ready! Keep your eyes open for the Mountain Cycles in the films!

BIG BEAR NORBA NATIONAL UPDATE
OK, so we were a little late getting this news posted after the race! With the Memorial Day extended weekend, lot’s of riding and barbequing had priority over the website update after we returned! We were a little skeptical of the possible turnout of spectators and racers alike, however the event seemed to be as popular as ever! The Mountain Cycle booth was packed with consumers, industry friends, racers and dealers whom all enjoyed cold Portland Brews and good BBQ’d hot dogs and chicken sandwiches. The racing was great, and the courses were dialed. Unfortunately for the semi-pro racers, our own Shawn Collins didn’t have his Pro License in time for the race, so he was racing in the semi-pro class. The Mountain Cross course was filled with big jumps and berms that had all the racers smiling and Collins qualified first! However, during the race, Collins was in the lead but was bumped from behind by another rider and went down. The Pro/Expert DH course was a good time as well and similar to downhill BMX course that was loaded with over 20 jumps. Collins had a rough run at the top losing some time, but got it together halfway down and had the crowd going crazy as he blazed through the final section of jumps before the finish line, garnering third place for his effort. We had many other ShockWave 9point5’s racing in the Expert and Semi-Pro categories which was great to see, because all the racers have been extremely happy with their new bikes. The popular Rumble Raffle was a great success with many people taking test rides on the new models and filling out surveys to enter the contests. The winner of Friday’s raffle was one very stoked Chris Lambert from California who picked the black frame. Saturday was the most attended day of the event with many people entering to win another Rumble. The lucky winner ended up being a good friend of ours from our old home on the central coast of California, Travis Robertson who is an extremely fast semi-pro racer and should have a good time on his new Mountain Cycle.

2003 SEA OTTER CLASSIC RACE NEWS AND
BIG BEAR RAFFLE TEASER!!
This year's 2003 Sea Otter Race was a
great time for all. The weather was perfect with blue skies all day during
the week, but the typical Sea Otter rainy weather moved in on Saturday
and Sunday providing slippery courses and mud for the weekend events…
but nobody seemed to care as smiles were everywhere! Maybe that’s
because our booth was full of beer that warmed everybody up!
The
Mountain Cycle booth was packed every day with dealers, racers and
consumers enjoying demo rides, Portland brew and a tasty BBQ! We
raffled off a brand new 2003 Rumble frame both Friday and Saturday afternoon
to two very excited and lucky winners. Friday’s
winner was Scott Robinson from our old home of San Luis Obispo, California!!
He was planning on purchasing a Rumble even if he didn’t win
as he loved the test ride… but luck was on his side and he went
home no money out of pocket and ready to Rumble!! Saturday’s
winner was Marissa Halbeisen, also from California. Her uncle,
who was also present, has been riding a San Andreas since 1996, so the
new Rumble was well received by the whole family!
Our long time racer, Shawn Collins, was faster than many big names and
qualified for the Pro Mountain Cross after being on his new Rumble hardtail
(his first hardtail in over 3 years) for only about an hour!! Not only
was he just getting used to the bike, but he also was riding on a broken
collar bone that has not finished healing! However, come race time,
the collar bone was causing too much pain for him to perform at his best.
But our hats are off to him as just qualifying under the circumstances
is amazing!! Keep an eye out for Shawn this season as he rips up
the west coast race scene!
We will be doing more Rumble frame raffles during the 2003 Big Bear NORBA
National that’s scheduled for May 15-18!! So be sure to come
by the booth during the races to take a test ride and enter to win one
of the very popular high performance hardtail Rumble frames!

WIN A FREE RUMBLE FRAME AT THE
2003 SEA OTTER CLASSIC RACE!
That's right, we will be raffling off 2 brand new Rumbles
during the Monterey, California race on Friday and Saturday afternoon!
To enter, stop by the booth anytime and take one of the demo bikes for
a quick test ride and fill out a brief survey entry form. We look forward
to seeing you there!
