How to Get Sponsored
We get this question more often than any other. The truth is, there are no simple instructions for landing a factory ride. We sponsor riders because their use and endorsement of DK products helps us build our reputation as a leader among BMX manufacturers. We select the riders who endorse our products based on a wide range of criteria, including but not limited to:

RIDING ABILITY
PERSONALITY
ATTITUDE
APPEARANCE
PROFESSIONALISM
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
FRIENDLINESS
APPROACHABILITY
GENEROSITY
EDUCATION
INTELLIGENCE
HEALTH

In other words, a skilled, likable, friendly, clean, talkative, smart and healthy rider has a better chance of getting sponsored than someone who is just out to get free stuff just because they are the local tough guy at their trails in Pig Knuckle, Oklahoma. If you still want to be sponsored, here are a few tips that can make the challenge easier:

1) Pick your parts carefully, and stick with them. BMX team managers love riders who are dedicated to their brand. If you want to be sponsored by DK someday, you can increase your odds significantly by riding a DK that you actually paid for.

2) Introduce yourself to your local dealer, and make yourself useful to him. If you need new tires, ask your local dealer if you can clean his windows, sweep his floors or wash his car in exchange for some free parts. If he sells t-shirts, buy some and wear them at the local trails. Sponsorship is a means of compensating a rider or athlete for his faithful use and endorsement of a service or product. Nike wouldn¹t pay Michael Jordan millions of dollars to wear shoes if all you saw Jordan playing in was Reeboks. The same logic applies to the low-stakes world of local BMX retailing. If you and your friends consistently spend money and do favors for your local bike shop owner, he'll be way more likely to help you if and when your riding skills improve.

3) Don't ride a hunk of junk. Keep your bike clean and dialed in. If you insist on peeling off all the decals, at least run one or two decals from the manufacturer so people can tell what brand of bike you ride.

4) Learn how to ride. If you ride vert, don't try flip flairs until you can get at least eight feet out smoothly every time. If you ride dirt, don't try barspin backflips until you can get flat with style. If you ride street, don't huck yourself off buildings until you can do a feeble grind switch and regular. If you race, don't get fifth in the quarters and expect to get a full factory ride.

Some guys will ride their entire lives and never win a race or a enter a contest or get a photo in the magazine. If you're one of these guys, you'll probably never be sponsored.
